Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 1, 2026
Subtara is a browser extension for reading and translating YouTube captions in a separate reading panel. This policy explains how the extension processes information and how to contact us about privacy.
The optional error-reporting feature described below applies to version 0.0.3 and later. Publishing this policy does not mean that version 0.0.3 is already available in the Chrome Web Store.
Contents
1. Information used for captions
To provide the reading panel, Subtara processes the current YouTube video's identifier, available caption tracks, caption text and timings, playback position, selected languages, and translations. This enables caption loading, translation, synchronization, and seeking when you request it.
Subtara requires available captions; it does not transcribe the video's audio. The extension does not require an account or ask for your name or email address. It does not track your browsing history across unrelated websites.
2. Translation and network requests
Caption data comes from the YouTube page and YouTube's caption services. Where available, YouTube may also provide translated captions. Subtara can additionally use the browser's built-in Translator API for local translation. Your browser may download and manage the language models required for that feature.
Subtara does not operate a server to receive caption text for translation. Caption availability and supported translation combinations depend on YouTube and your browser. The extension is not an entirely offline service: retrieving captions, obtaining available YouTube translations, and downloading browser language models can involve network requests.
YouTube's and your browser provider's services are subject to their respective privacy policies.
3. Optional error reporting
Error reporting is off until you agree. When certain caption-loading failures, translation-preparation failures, or rate limits occur, Subtara may display a choice in the reading panel.
Choosing to allow automatic reports permits the current filtered diagnostic report to be sent and enables future automatic reports. Choosing not to send is remembered. Either choice leaves caption and translation features available. You can change your choice through the Subtara extension icon.
When enabled, reports are sent to Sentry to help investigate reliability problems. Reports may contain:
- an error category and a limited error-type label;
- the extension version and whether it is a test or production build;
- source or target language codes;
- the stage of caption loading or translation preparation;
- HTTP status codes, durations, retry timing, and process flags;
- counts such as caption, character, or track counts;
- a timestamp and randomly generated identifier for that individual report.
The report identifier is not a persistent user or installation identifier.
Subtara filters reports before sending them. Error reports do not include caption or translated text, video titles, video URLs or video identifiers, signed caption-request URLs, cookies, authentication tokens, raw exception messages, or stack traces. This reporting feature does not enable session replay, advertising tracking, or behavioral analytics.
Turning reporting off stops new reports and discards queued reports. It cannot withdraw reports that Sentry has already received. The extension does not maintain a persistent backlog of report contents for later upload. A current filtered report may be held temporarily in page memory so it can be sent if you agree in the failure prompt. Enabling reporting from settings does not upload a history of past errors.
4. Sentry and processing location
We use Sentry as a service provider for optional technical error reports. Our Sentry organization uses data storage in the United States.
Our project is configured to prevent IP addresses from being stored in new error events and to filter geographic fields such as country, region, and city. These protections do not mean that connection information never reaches a server: the receiving service necessarily processes network connection information when a request is made. They also do not retroactively remove information from older events.
For information about Sentry's processing, see the Sentry Privacy Policy.
5. Local storage
Subtara uses YouTube site storage (localStorage) for reading preferences, panel dimensions, and translation-related caches. Depending on the feature, cached data can include video identifiers, original text, translations, and language choices.
The translation cache has no automatic expiration. It remains subject to browser storage limits and your browser settings. This is YouTube-origin storage rather than extension-private storage; scripts running on that origin could in principle access it.
The extension separately uses Chrome extension storage to remember your error-reporting choice. Temporary extension-session storage helps limit duplicate or excessive reports. Report contents are not saved as a persistent upload queue.
6. Permissions
Subtara requests access to YouTube pages to read caption and playback information, retrieve captions, display its panel, and respond to your playback-seeking actions. It may briefly enable native YouTube captions to obtain caption data, then restore the prior setting while respecting your own changes.
The extension also requests the Chrome storage permission to save settings and access to its specific Sentry ingestion endpoint for optional error reporting. Permission to access that endpoint does not by itself enable reports; your reporting choice controls whether reports are sent.
Subtara does not inject its own advertising or use these permissions to collect unrelated page information.
7. Retention and your controls
Local caption-related data remains until removed, replaced, or cleared by you or the browser. You can clear YouTube site data in your browser settings. This may also remove YouTube sign-in information and other site preferences.
Disabling or uninstalling the extension stops it from running but does not guarantee removal of data stored on the YouTube origin. Clear that site data separately if you want to remove it.
Sentry event retention depends on the active service plan and the provider's retention rules. Disabling reporting does not immediately delete previously received reports or provider backups. Contact us with questions about existing reports. Because the extension does not include a persistent user identifier in reports, we may be unable to associate a particular report with you without additional information, such as its event identifier and approximate time.
8. Sharing and use restrictions
Subtara does not sell data or use caption information or error reports for advertising, cross-site profiling, or unrelated purposes. Optional error reports are used to diagnose and improve the extension. YouTube and browser services handle the requests necessary for their own caption and translation functionality.
Subtara's use of information received through Chrome extension APIs follows the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.
9. Website visits and support messages
Visiting subtara.com is separate from enabling error reporting in the extension. Delivering and protecting the website involves its hosting and network providers processing connection information, such as an IP address and requested page. The website uses Cloudflare email-address protection. The extension's reporting switch does not control website delivery requests or services operated by YouTube or your browser provider.
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever information you include so we can respond. Please avoid sending caption-request tokens, cookies, or other credentials. Support correspondence is separate from the extension's filtered automatic reports.
10. Children's privacy
Subtara is not directed at children. If you believe a child has supplied personal information to us, please contact us so we can investigate and address it.
11. Changes
We may update this policy as the extension changes and will update the effective date. If a change requires an additional disclosure or choice, we will provide it through an appropriate product notice. Updating this policy does not itself enable optional error reporting.
